Van swallowed by sinkhole

A van driver got the shock of his life when the road suddenly caved in beneath him.

The vehicle was seen suddenly disappearing down a newly-formed giant sinkhole on a road in the city of Guilin, southern China. Luckily, the driver only had slight injuries.

Experts said the cave-in was due to the local geology of the area. The karst landscape in the Guangxi region means when there is rain, the rising water underground can wash away the soil, causing a cave-in.

The local public infrastructure company has refilled the sinkhole with soil.
