CLMRG rescues cave explorer

China Lake Mountain Rescue Group personnel rescued a Bishop man in Inyo County Monday after he was overdue from exploring a cave in the Inyo Mountains.

Group Leader Dave Miles said Inyo County Search and Rescue called the local group Monday morning at 5 a.m., and he, Dan Bishop and Linda Finco arrived in the Inyo Mountains at 8:30 a.m. to join Inyo SAR who had started the search during the night.

The man was located at approximately 11 a.m.

“Inyo County called us out for a guy who was overdue from going to a cave,” Miles said.

He said the man left Jan. 1 at approximately 11 a.m. for the Inyo Mountains to explore a cave and did not return that evening.

“His wife reported him missing, and they sent out a team that night, but they did not locate him,” Miles said. They had more Inyo SAR guys out Jan. 2. They called us out. We ended up finding his tracks, which led us to where the cave actually was.”

He said a California Highway Patrol helicopter spotted the cave and noticed a black duffel bag outside.

“We went to the cave, yelled down into the hole. He answered back and was fine,” he said. “He was stranded in the hole. He was not able to ascend up out of the hole. We did a raising and hoisted him out of the hole.”
